No mám dve deti (7 a 9rokov), rozvinuli svoj záujem o túto hru keď zvykli sledovať rugby v televízii so mnou.

Takže koho vlastne hľadáte do juniorského teamu?

Asi hlavne ľudia, ktorí ten šport nepoznajú a pletú si ho s Americkým futbalom.

Guy, what is your background in rugby?

I love playing many different types of sport. Rugby was forced on me at school. In the UK your school is usually either football or rugby. At first I was disappointed mine was a rugby school but very soon I grew to love the game and spent most Saturday mornings playing matches. I later played at college and University, but once I joined the working world I drifted away from the playing side of the game, though still remained a passionate supporter. Many years later I joined up with some friends in starting a junior rugby training camp, before moving to Slovakia.

Did you have a nickname in your team?

Only one, “Gilbert”, as it was said that my passes were so slow you could still see the manufacturers name on the ball ! Of course, I treated it as a mark of respect ! And I found that there’s usually a Gilbert in every team.

How did you get involved with RKB?

Well, my two children, who are 7 and 9, developed their own interest in the game through watching matches on TV with me. They also found my rugby ball in the garden hedge and started to play with it rather than the round ones they were used to. So I felt that they were old enough to find out what it is like to play the game. After asking a couple of fellow ex-pat friends what they knew about rugby locally I contacted Charlie at RKB and got an immediate reply welcoming us along to the next training session.

So does your passion for rugby run in the family?

I think partly, yes. My elder son, Christian, has decided it is not for him at the moment though I hope he can be persuaded back onto the pitch. But I was pleased he came to a couple of sessions, and that is what trying out a new sport is all about. If you don’t try then you don’t know. Daniel, on the other hand, really enjoys it, mixing with kids his age and older, who are of varying nationalities. He genuinely gets excited about training sessions on Wednesday evenings, even though it means he won’t be able to play FIFA17 on the computer!

So what can a new junior visitor to the Rugby School expect? What goes on at a training session?

The most striking thing is how friendly the atmosphere is. There are a varying range of ages from 7 upwards but no one feels left out. All the kids are equally involved and amidst the hard work you can see their enjoyment (as proof just check out the videos and pictures on the club FB page). Whilst rugby is a full contact game the junior sessions are almost all touch rugby sessions as we appreciate the need for safety. We concentrate mainly on basic skills and movement/fitness, whilst also making sure the kids are involved in fun and competitive games. We want each child to go home feeling they have enjoyed the evening but also feeling that they have tried hard and improved on some aspect of their game.

So who are you looking to join the junior rugby school? Does a child who is new to the sport need to be especially skilled in any way?

We would welcome boys or girls, young or old (our youngest kids are 7 which is a great age to learn from), big or small.

And no, there is no skills test on joining. It’s a real team sport. There is little room for the Messi’s and Ronaldo’s in rugby, though a little flair is always a plus. So a desire to be part of a team helps, but most skills in rugby can be successfully coached. Any beginner would be able to fit straight in to a training session, even if they have never touched a rugby ball before.

Is there anything you don’t like about rugby?

That people who don’t know the sport think it is similar to American Football. However, the 2 sports are so different and without doubt rugby wins hands down for skill and entertainment.
